MTN is a joke!
I was looking into getting a contract on MTnN and thought 'Score' when I saw their good contract prices.
Hmm lets see only R80 a month! Not to bad...so I thought.I done some more research and found out they charge you for delivery reports!I mean wtf! That means an sms will cost you double the price if you have reports on.hmmm lets have a look at sms costs...86c,and there is no off-peak!It is a flat-rate of 86c!I mean you might think to yourself 'Wow its only a few cents more than vodacom',who charge 35c off-peak,but let me demonstarte how crap this is...for me anyway.
Smsing is damn popular and lets say a contract costs me R80 ... and lets say I were to send 200 sms per month.200x.86 = R172!!!!So thats R252 exluding call charges, itemised billing and CLIP!lets compare that to vodacom,I found a special which cost R10 more pm.So its R90 lets say 100 sms's peak and 100 off-peak...although i do most of my sms'n after hours (100*0.35 = 100 *0.75 = 110!)
so that comes to R42 less than MTN!But wait theres more to bitch and moan about..vodacom offer sms bundles which reduce the costs of the sms's which excede the bundle...they offer 100,200 and 500 sms bundles....where MTN dont have the 200 option and do not reduce their charges after the bundle has been exceded!
Taking bundles in account vodacom can become over R70 cheaper than MTN per month!Thats with minimal use of the contract!
MTN SUCKS!

i use MTN, but its purly cause of work, we use MTN sim cards in our gsm security systems. Vodacom is way better for voice and at the moment they are cheaper with regards to some of the contracts but MTN kill all when it comes to Data bandwidth.
D34th look at some of the more expencice contracts, they might save you money, they did with mine.

I use MTN, I got my contract on special R29pm for 24months... pretty cheap, I rather make voice calls than sms, the most I have paid so far is R380..

I had a couple of contract phones on MTN, and I must say their service sucked. I changed to Cell C and I have been highly impressed with their efficiency and quality of service. I know a lot of people have complaints about them but I have nothing but good things to say about Cell C

PS - i know this is off-topic, but mtn users can call 16202 for a very detailed report of your account. And, did you know, that if you have itemised billing you can check your stuff out online at

are you 100% sure on that? I can check my airtime even after all my minutes are up, how much exactly does it cost? I haven't noticed how much my time has dropped each time I check but I can keep checking so it must be free?

as far as i know vodacom doesn't charge u for the report on a sms, and it doesn't charge u for doing the *100# to check ur balance.
and if u really do sms more that what u call, why don't u consider something like the familytopup from vodacom ? u pay a set fee of R135 (if u don't get a special like i did for R29 for the first year) and then u get R135 worth of actual airtime .... so u don't pay for other bullshit and stuff that u don't use / get ..... it's like pay as u go on steriods. and when u've exceeded ur R135 of that specific month, u just go buy some more air-time. and if u don't use it all, it gets transfered to ur next month. so for someone that doesn't make a lot of voice calls (but even if u do, their rates are basically the same as for a contract), it's worth it .... or so far it is for me.

yah, i'm sure that mtn doesnt charge contract subscribers for delivery reports either... i know payg users pay for reports, but i'm pretty sure that contract users get them free

I never knew though that you have to pay to listen how many free ,minutes and all u still have...that is just weak

Costs R1.00 to check. You can check your free minute balance on their website for free though.

Mmmm... well, I'm on Cell C, and it's the worst mistake I've ever made - cheap, but not actually that cheap, terrible service and terrible coverage - on average, I have one or two dropped calls every day.

my gf is on Cell C, the coverage is shocking, try selecting the vodacom network on your cellphone, it improves the coverage, cause cell c piggy back off the vodacom and mtn networks and when it switches between a vodacom tower and a mtn tower you loose the call

Damn, where do you guys live that you get such shitty coverage? I can't think of a single time I've had a call dropped.

I have to agree with the Ferret. I've had a CellC contract for almost 2 years and I just renewed it today. I've often spoken on the phone for 3 hours (single call) while driving from JHB to DBN and vice versa.
Set the phone to use the Vodacom network. Works much better.

erm....no they do not......i work for cell c and we do not use mtn towers....vodacom yes indeed we do .........all cell c users should have there network selection set to vodacom...in most cases its the only one that will work

i've bn with vodacom payg for years and i've honestly bn very happy with them.
imho MTN is just too damn expensive - on all counts, only have 1 friend on MTN payg, but he has far too much cash for his own good.
one thing i'll say in their defence though, i havent ever seen an mtn phone out of range of a tower. whenever i'm on holiday in the bush out in the middle of nowhere, mtn will be the only one with signal, literally. the rest of us voda/cellc ppl have to find the spot under some acacia somewhere that's 5kms walk that has 1 bar of signal. (okay, the chick on cellc ended up using everyone else's phone

okaai, well, i'm sure that the current network infrastructure cell phone companies are using was not intended for 5 or 6mb downloads ":/
You get crazy low speeds for downloading, after all, you're only supposed to be viewing basic websites on a cellphone, not heavy ones.
The new infrastructure, 3G, yes download with it, it's like ADSL, so i dunno why you complaining after being hit with the bill because you are boycotting.
I will wait until you manage to get a prepaid card to reply ":/
