The new, more powerful Boxster will be Porsche's prizefighter in Paris, but the Züffenhausen-based manufacturer has not tinkered too much with the roadster's styling. How does it compare with the styling of the Z4, SLK, TT and other competitors?

The new Boxster will be available in Europe in November and in right-hand drive markets, such as South Africa, is February next year. As can be seen from these pictures, the front end of Porsche's entry-level range has been refined and now has integrated fog lamps and indicators and Cayenne-like headlights, which separate the main headlamps and front lamps.

When viewed from the side, the new Boxster has larger air vents before the rear axle, elaborate door sills, larger window in the transition from the B-pillar to the roof, larger rims and a wider wheel alignment than its predecessor.

The 2,7-litre six-cylinder engine in the Boxster will produce 176 kW - 8 kW more than previously. The Boxster S, which will be fitted with 18-inch wheels, will be launched simultaneously.

The S' power output has been increased from 191 kW to 206 kW, while cubic capacity has remained unchanged at 3,2 litres.

The Boxster is said to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6,2 seconds, going on to reach a top speed of 256 km/h. Porsche claims the model will consume an average 9,6 litres per 100 km.

The Boxster S is claimed to dash from standstill to 100 km/h in 5,5 seconds, achieve a top speed of 268 km/h and return an average of 10,4 litres per 100 km.

Power is transmitted by a revised five-speed manual transmission in case of the Boxster and a new six-speed gearbox in the S model. Porsche say the shift travel is now considerably shorter for both transmission variants. Both vehicles can optionally be equipped with a five-speed Tiptronic S transmission.

Züffenhausen further claim that the Boxster will be the first roadster in the world to secure passengers against lateral impact using head airbags. In combination with a thorax airbag, which is concealed on the outer side of the backrest, the airbag shoots out from the side window rail of the door and provides a very high level of protection for the head, the company says.

Porsche SA spokesman Jessica Baker said the company would start taking orders for the cars very shortly. An entry-level coupé version of the Boxster is also in the pipeline, sources say

10/10 for looks. These guys just do better and better every time. SLK or Z4 doesn't even come close to this!

Hmmm.... it's not THAT different to the old one, so I feel less impressed by this than the previous one. confused.gif
Carnajo
I for one really like it, and think it will look even more different in RL than photos, but just a feeling.

While not as powerful or expensive as, say, the 911. The Boxters use true, 100% pureblooded Porsche engines, specifically, the unique Porsche boxser engine (yes Boxser is a specific type of engine, the pistons lie flat) wich evolved from Ferdinand Porsche's designs from 1930. So IMHO it is far from being a "fake" Porsche.

YMMV though.
blood105
it looks really stunning no doubt
but i think that you normally associate porsche with prestige and power, and this thing is lacking some power (well all boxters really).
so i guess im not the only one who (incorrectly) thinks of the boxter for posers
nemesis
The Boxster has been an incredible success for Porsche though, and thats exactly what Wendelin Weideking (spelt it correctly?) is setting out to do. Pity, as the racing heritage Porsche has always been associated with no longer survives.
Carnajo
Lol, you make it sound like it's a 1.4l hatchback tongue.gif
It's still plenty powerful, just not 911 turbo powerful.

Yep, "underpowered".

Just kidding really, everyone's opinion may vary.
Think of it as an entry level Porsche biggrin.gif

Carnajo - i agree with you. I am HUGE a porsche fan and i for one love the boxter. True, its not like a 911 as you said, but its still a porsche.
vet-gat
subaru also make boxer engines dont they?

The boxter is cool but I'll have a second hand 993 rather.
Carnajo
Yes they do, Porsche spells theirs Boxser with an s in it, and the Subaru is plain boxer, but similar engine concept I think.

Perhaps I should say that by "unique" I didn't mean unique to Porsche, but rather "unique" as a type of engine, which was based on original designes by Ferdinand Porsche, or so I've read.

Hmm, Boxster coupe, that sounds interesting to me.
Better start saving up!

EDIT: spelling.

Not a radical departure from the original, but the update in design is certainly evident, especially when pictured together.
THE SAiNT
It does not look like the previous model although you can still see it's a Porsche. It seems as though they incorporated the new 911 look into the Boxster meaning, the going back to rounded lights as aposed to the egg shaped lights.
At the back the lights are more linear as aposed to the old lights wich had a sort of a round form at the top. The new look is very appealing. I'm glad they broke away from those egg shaped lights.

Oh, and I love the mags!!!

the boxster comes from the joining of the two words BOXer and roadSTER.

Porsche and Subaru both make Boxer engines (there is no spelling difference) also known as Horizontally Opposed engines or 180 degree V's.

offtopic.gif BMW also makes Boxer engines. Just not for cars.
