How many of you remember The Transformers? That show about the robots from outer space that can transform into cars and such?
More recently, we saw the newer version of the Transformers on tv, namely the CGI based "Beast Wars", but that was just eye candy, as the stories weren't as good as what we saw in the show from the 80s.
Well, before I digress any further, suffice it to say that I have created this thread in order to announce that Hollywood is set to make a Transformers movie.
This will not be a movie with traditional animation, or CGI, but a live-action movie. The good news is that Dreamworks Studios is attached to this project, as well as Steven Spielberg, who will not direct, but executive produce. Producers from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, X-Men and X2: X-Men United are also set to produce the movie.
Release of the movie is set for (the American) Summer of 2006.

TLOEM is bad..X-Men 1/2 gives more hope! I guess we'll see in the future what it can bring us.

John Rogers, who wrote the screenplay for Catwoman is doing the same for this movie.
The good news is that Steven Spielberg is still producing, so this should be one of the better conversions out there (*tries not to think about Hook*).
John is also working on the Rush Hour 2 script.

News on a potential director.
QUOTE
Michael Bay ("Armageddon", "Pearl Harbor") may come on board to direct a live action movie based on the '80s phenomenon The Transformers, scheduled for a Thanksgiving 2006 releaes from DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures.
Steven Spielberg, who is currently directing The War of the Worlds for the two companies, signed on as an executive producer for the project, giving it to writers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci to get into shape. Having worked with Michael Bay on his upcoming sci-fi film (The Island), they were probably pivotal in getting the director excited about the project and interested in directing it. DreamWorks will work on securing Bay for the project once the first new script is turned in.

Is Transformers Happening? Source: Edward Douglas July 11, 2005
That seems to be the question on everyone's minds after reports that the live action Transformers, executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, has been back-burnered, while writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci go to Rome to start working on Mission: Impossible 3 with Tom Cruise and director J.J. Abrams, with whom they've worked for many years on the ABC show Alias. (We'll have more on that a little later today.)
Well, it is true that they are going to Rome, but that doesn't mean that the duo aren't on top of the Transformers situation, as they told ComingSoon.net while talking to us about Michael Bay's The Island earlier today.
"'Transformers' is very tricky, because it's a movie based on a toy line," Kurtzman told us, when asked about how hard it might be to turn the Hasbro toys into a feature film. "The first question you have to ask yourself is what's the movie? We sat down with Steven Spielberg, and we said that the action scenes in this movie are a given, but he said that that it's the story of a boy and his car and that he wants to bring back the old Amblin movies. It's 'Back to the Future'…great! We're in! It's a real challenge, because the key to making those movies work--and I totally think it's why 'War of the Worlds' works so well--is to be so invested in the people and to maintain the subjectivity of the humans. If you start 'Transformers' with giant robots sitting in a spaceship flying through space, your movie is dead in the water. It's all about keeping it at a human level, and seeing the amazing things that are going on through the eyes of the characters."
The Transformers legacy is so vast and full of characters, we just had to know who they may be including in the story. "The staple characters: Optimus Prime, Megatron, Soundwave, Shockwave, Starscream, Jazz," Kurtzman replied. "There's going to be a lot of them. You're going to have ten Transformers in that movie, and if that's not enough, you can go see 2, 3, 4 or 5."
"The meat and potatoes are going to be in there," writing partner Roberto Orci continued. "We're just missing the premise for the sequels."
They still believe that Michael Bay may be directing the movie, but they do have to hand in the script before he makes a final decision. Neither said anything about a "two week deadline" that has been mentioned on other sites. Later on, Bay was just as non-committal, although he did say they were working on the script and designing it right now.
Most likely it will.

The movie has been pushed back:

Transformers Moved Back to 2007 Source: DreamWorks Pictures July 13, 2005
With Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci taking time off from the project to go to Rome and start working on J.J. Abrams' Mission: Impossible 3, starring Tom Cruise, DreamWorks and Paramount have moved the big screen robots adaptation back from November 17, 2006 to July 4, 2007.
The feature, based on the globally popular Transformers franchise, will be directed by Michael Bay (upcoming The Island, Armageddon). Steven Spielberg (War of the Worlds) is executive producing the film, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura (upcoming Four Brothers), Tom DeSanto (X-Men, X2: X-Men United) and Don Murphy (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) serving as co-executive producers.
DreamWorks head of distribution Jim Tharp stated, "Under the direction of Michael Bay, and with Steven Spielberg executive producing, we know that 'Transformers' is going to be the kind of explosive action movie that is perfect for the height of the summer movie season. By staking our claim on the 4th of July, 2007, we ensure that we not only have the time to make this movie the way it should be made, but also to build excitement and awareness leading up to its release."
"Fans around the world have wanted a Transformers live-action movie for a long time and we are thrilled to work with DreamWorks and Paramount to bring this legendary saga to life on the big screen," said Brian Goldner, President of Hasbro's U.S. Toy segment. "With some of the entertainment industry's best talent on board for this film, fans will experience Transformers in a way that is incredibly powerful."
DreamWorks will distribute the film domestically, while Paramount will handle the international release. Hasbro will work with the production team and DreamWorks on all aspects of the film's creative development, marketing and promotions, and will manage merchandising in conjunction with the release of the film.
This week, DreamWorks is launching the official Transformers movie website at Comic-Con International, being held from July 13 - 17 in San Diego, California. Transformers will also be making its presence at the convention known in a big way, with a huge 18-wheeler truck sporting the instantly recognizable Transformers logo dominating the area near the DreamWorks booth-and much of the convention floor-letting thousands of fans know that Transformers is coming to the big screen on 07-04-07.
Introduced in 1984, the Transformers brand took the world by storm with its compelling saga of the Autobots versus the Decepticons. The innovative "Robots in Disguise" resulted in a tremendously successful toy line from Hasbro and Takara, comic book series, television program and an animated feature film. More than 20 years later, a new generation has discovered the excitement of the Transformers brand and its legendary characters, including the two leaders of the opposing sides: Optimus Prime and Megatron. Today, the franchise features a popular toy line, an animated series on the Cartoon Network and a chart-topping comic book series from IDW Publishing.

IGN Filmforce has confirmed a recent rumor that Shia LaBeouf (Constantine, I, Robot) is in talks to play Sam in Paramount's big screen Transformers adaptation, directed by Michael Bay and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
A casting sheet making the rounds includes a description of the Sam character, as well as the humans in the film:
Sam - teenage male, somewhat nerdy, but ultimately heroic.
Miguela Barns - teenage female, Sam's love interest.
Cpt William Lennicks - 30s male, leader of the military.
Maggie - female, really hot, really smart, works as a codebreaker for the government.
John Kellar - 50's/60's male, US Secretary of State.
ComingSoon.net has confirmed that the teaser trailer for director Michael Bay's Transformers will debut online first at the official website on July 4th (it is what the clock is counting down to on the site). Then the teaser will play in theaters on most screens with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on July 7th.
DreamWorks' big screen adaptation, written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, stars Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Jon Voight, Bernie Mac, Tyrese Gibson, Rachael Taylor, Amaury Nolasco, Kevin Dunn and Ronnie Sperling.
The action-adventure hits theaters on July 4th, 2007.
This really sounds lame to me, I have been wondering how it might look like but the thought of Michael Bay really makes me sick (aka Bad Boy II / The Island sick).

Peter Cullen (original voice of Optimus Prime)) will be reprising his role :
QUOTE
RT-News writes: "This year's Comic-Con is the last where Transformers movie news can possibly be revealed, as the film releases next year on July 4th. As such, plenty of aspects of the film are being hinted at while the main, big secrets of the film remain under lock and key. At today's Hasbro Transformers toy panel, the toy company debuted the new 20th Century edition DVD box, and talked briefly about the upcoming live action Michael Bay film based on their toys.
... Perhaps the most interesting tidbit gleaned from the panel is the fact that Peter Cullen is seriously being considered by the filmmakers for the voice of Optimus Prime. Cullen played the voice of Prime, and several other Transformers, in both the animated series and Transformers: The Movie. Fan support for Cullen as Prime has blossomed on Internet message boards, and according to members of the panel, Michael Bay and company are looking into using Cullen as a result.
--UPDATE--
During Friday's Paramount/"Stardust" panel, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed the addition of Cullen to the cast; Cullen will indeed reprise the voice role of Optimus Prime, as in the "Transformers" series and 1986 film.

Transformers opens July 4.
And if this flops when it opens on an American holiday, then one should consider not paying to see this on the big screen.
Can't say I give a shit about Transformers but it does look spectacular and might be a fun (dumb) ride

I just got home from watching this movie and i have some mixed feelings about it...
For example: I was a little cheesed off that Bumble Bee, who was a Volkswagen Beetle was swapped for a yellow Camero. The whole appeal of his character and the reason for his name came from the fact that he was a Beetle.
Eish, I guess I am too much of a purist, I know that then needed to modernize the characters to suite todays trends etc.
Oh well, I really enjoyed the movie despite the radical changes that were made to characters.
It's ironic that Star Scream was still being chastized by Megatron... the poor guy never could get it right, even in the original series or the original movie.
The original movie had some pretty interesting voice actors...
Jazz was played by Scatman Crothers for instance, Eric Idle made an appearance, so did Leonard Nemoy as Galvatron and interesting enough... so did Orson Wells as Unicron!
I really must find that DVD of mine now...

I thought the movie was rad. The beginning promised a more hardcore flick than what the middle delivered, but if you overlook the obvious changes and flaws from the original it's still an awesome movie.

I agree mate.
If you watch the movie for what it is and ignore what you know about the original - then it's a great movie.
My mates who hadn't really watched the original enjoyed it thoroughly and I didn't tell them about the changes that were made. Didn't want to spoil it for them.

I started watching this when it first came out on DVD and halfway I turned it off (just after Bumblebee whoops the other dude and that manic little robot gets his arms/head cut off), then I decided that I wasn't in the mood for it.
So the other day I bought the movie for R20 and popped it in where I ended it last night. And wow, I must've been really tired not to continued it that other night because the bang came in just after that scene.
Its dumb, sure, but it has heart and Shia really carries his own throughout this spectacle. Megan Fox is not my type and has no point (as usual) but the main peanut(s) in the pack are the Transformers themselves, the work put into those massive and complex things alone should make anyone at least respect the movie (on that point).
Bay still knows how to direct action (except The Island which somehow failed on so many levels despite having a cast of talents) and it just oozed fun right till the end.
8/10. Glad I gave it a second chance.
