About two weeks ago I bought a sony DVD Writer from a local dealer for R1299 (DRU-530A). Its 8xDVD+R etc. I went to Makro toda and see the price is a staggering R2598. That nearly DOUBLE the price. What are your views on the matter ?

look dude - the price you quote is cheaper than the cost price i get from suppliers - when you include the vat - damn i could buy a shitload from where you bought it and go and supply makro and id become a millionaire overnight
they probably get it from a different supplier anyway - when i bought my sony dru510 direct from the suppliers (drive control durban) about 5 months ago i actually paid R1999 + vat which worked out to about R2280 while makro were selling the same unit for R2499 so yeah they made around R220 per unit and considering that they are a national concern with large overheads and normally low margins id say that that wasnt bad going
i agree that prices have dropped but have you considered that makro themselves may be getting ripped off - also when they buy stock they buy large amounts thus they cannot just drop their price when everybody else drops their prices which is why shrewd dealers dont carry stock which can become obsolete easilly or as in this case where prices will really drop
id also like to say that if you really bought it for that amount which i find difficult to believe since ive consulted some suppliers pricelists and what you are claiming to have paid is actually the cost excluding the vat so if you did pay that amount its probably something that fell off the back of a truck or something like that - either way you seem to have been blessed with good fortune to recieve it at price for retail
anyways guys one thing you should all learn is that when a retailer sells you his shit - he needs to pay for that item then pay vat and also then pay taxes on his profits also he needs to pay rent and telephone bills and electricity and also for the paper and printers and fucking ink that he prints your invoice with and also pay those guys who happen to have to serve you and will always encounter some guys who dont have a clue who will fuck the unit up and demand to return it for a replacement unit - so is it any wonder that any organisation will want to build that into their pricing structure - i sure as well would want to
then you hear all the time about rip-offs etc - i dont blame the companies out there that are high priced - i dont have any problem with incredible connection or makro etc maybe its cos when i did economics 3 and business economics 3 at university i learned a little about how businesses are supposed to operate
