The Commonwealth Short Story Competition aims to reward excellent writing for radio, both amateur and professional, from throughout the Commonwealth. Since 1996, the competition has brought forward excellent writing for radio from thoughout the Commonwealth. The winning stories are recorded in the BBC World Overseas Studios and members of the organisers, the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA), receive recordings of the winning entries for radio broadcast in their countries. The 28 winners from around the Commonwealth therefore not only receive a cash prize, but have the satisfaction of knowing their stories are heard on the radio in the kitchens, bedrooms and fields of the Commonwealth from Solomon Islands to India, from Malawi to Canada.
All Commonwealth citizens - amateur and professional - are eligible to participate. Stories must be suitable for broadcast and may be on any theme. They should be of approximately 4.5 minutes' duration when read aloud, which is around 650 words in length. Entries must be in English, should be typed or word-processed on one side of paper and should not have been previously published anywhere.
The first prize is £2,000, and there are additional prizes for regional winners and runners up. All winners assign the Commonwealth broadcasting rights to the CBA to pass on to its members, but retain the copyright. They also assign publication rights for 10 years to the CBA and Commonwealth Foundation. Both these rights are non-exclusive.
The competition is sponsored by the Commonwealth Foundation and administered by the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association.
Entries should be sent by 1 May each year to:
