ha. My fone was once so crackly, that when i foned telkom, I couldn't even hear the guy, and he could hardly hear me, and the first thing he asks is "so what seems to be the problem?"

So then I explain it to him very simply (as if to a child), and he said, "alrite, I'm just going to test the line" - so i agreed, there is a 'click' and i get dial tone (well, really REALLY CRACKLY dial tone). That's great - so I fone up again, wait for about 15minutes while they repeat "morning is Broken" that sounds as if it is played of of a 386 PC speaker, and finally i get thru to another operator - he is just as intelligent as the other one, and asks "what is the problem" - so i tell him, and he said "sorry, I can't here you over the crackle - what did you say the problem was again?!"
He also decides to test the line, and the same thing happens: dialtone. So finally I fone up for a third time - wait another ten minutes, and speak to an operator, explaining the problem and PLEADING him not to test the line, because of what will happen.. so what does he do? you guessed it... DIALTONE.
Finally i decided enough was enough, my fone and all the fones up our cul-de-sac had been out for 2 weeks, and I hadn't been able to make a single call. I called them up over my cell phone, and basically turned the operator I finally spoke to into a whimpering pile of flesh on the floor, before speaking to the so-called 'manager' demanding that I get a refund/credit on my line rental, and that I am reimbursed however much money this Cellular Phone call is bound to cost. He basically refused, which is seriously unreasonable, I mean WHAT AM I PAYING FOR IF I CAN"T USE THE FONE?!
So now it is about 16.35, and he speaks to one of the operators, and puts me back to the operator, who tells me that the service technician has already been to my house and fixed the problem. I said, no he hasn't i've been here all day. The operator told me that the technician reported in at 16.20 - i told him that there is no way that he did, because he wouldn't have been able to get through the gates without my knowledge... and the OPERATOR ARGUED with me, saying that he did come? How the HELL does he know?
Finally, I get them to send technicians down - they will be there within 2 days, and the problem will be sorted.
Well the technicians did come, and they found that the problem lies in the box on the telephone poll between my neighbour's houses (both of whom work all day). So the telkom trucks arrive at aroudn midday, and wait for the owners to get home, so that they can get into the properties - then 17h00 comes, and they knock-off. at about 17.30-18.00 the neighbours arrive home - and this goes on for about 6 days. I mean are they that simple, that they do not realise that if the owners of that house ALSO work, they will only be home after 5?! So the techs basically got a week off work, because they sat around in the shade doing nothing.
It makes me so... fed up telkom does... and vodacom, and Mtn and flippin Cell C.
Last year I stayed in Belfast for 2 weeks - and I bought myself an O2 starter pack. Within 20minutes of sticking the sim card INTO my phone, I was called by an O2 representative. They activated my account, and asked what I would primarily be using this O2 account for - I told them that I would be mostly making use of international smsing. The rep asked me a few questions etc, and then told me that they would adjust my account so that I pay 1.5p for every intl (or local) sms.
That is the equivalent of 15c - half the price we pay for a local, off-peak sms, ant 10% of the price we pay for an intl. sms.
This telkom monopoly, and this Vodacom/MTN/Cell C Oligopoly has GOT TO STOP. Did you know that our Cell providers have an agreement NOT to compete on PRICE - only on services?
...It makes me feel physically ill when I think about the state of our telecommunications in this country.
