I was watching a news story on Caster Semenya and it got me thinking....

If a child is born a hermaphrodite - should a parent have the right to decide on the gender of the child at birth or should the decision be that of the child, when old enough to make that decision?

Should there be a decision at all? Is it necessary to be classified as male or female in a society which says that both genders are to be treated equally? Obviously the choice to be a particular gender determines the reproductive future of the child - but for all other purposes, is classification necessary?

And do you think that once a parent decides on a gender for the child and the child later in life realises that they want to be the opposite gender, can they claim compensation from their parents for 'forcing' them into being a particular gender?

this is a very touchy subject because the person is an abnormality, a freak of nature.

If a dog is born with with 3 eyes or something, we are likely to put it down, you cant do that with a human being but at the end of thenature its still unnatural so what do you do? do you give the choice to parents or to the child?

I dunno to be honest.

Ja, it's pretty tough... If you leave the child to decide later on what it wants to be, would the child shower in the boys', or the girls' locker room in the meantime?

God forbid I ever have to be left with such choices.

Also, saw on Carte Blanche this week that DDT is also something that causes these type of birth defects...

In this PC day and age if I am angry at such a person will I be allowed (or not) to say "go fuck yourself"?

i dont know either... watched the 3rd degree coverage of this topic in the week and its quite hectic what that guy has to go through now.

i think that as a parent if a doctor advises you that choosing a specific gender is in the best health interests of the child it might be justified to choose for the child... i know that having internal testes means greater chances of cancer

one can only pray that one day if you have children of your own, that he or she is a healthy normal beautiful baby
